If you are a Master Mason who has heard people talk about a Scottish Rite Reunion but never attended one, the name may sound more formal or mysterious than the experience actually is.
A Reunion is one of the most important ways Scottish Rite Masons come together to continue their Masonic education, experience degree work, and build Brotherhood.
It is not simply a meeting. It is a shared experience.
A Time for Degree Work
Scottish Rite Reunions are traditionally centered around the presentation of degrees.
Unlike the first three degrees of Freemasonry, which are received in the Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite degrees expand on Masonic lessons through drama, symbolism, history, philosophy, and moral reflection.
During a Reunion, selected degrees are presented by members of the Valley. These presentations are designed to do more than tell a story. They encourage Masons to think more deeply about subjects such as integrity, justice, faith, service, leadership, tolerance, and personal responsibility.
For men who are joining the Scottish Rite, a Reunion is often their first opportunity to experience these degrees as part of a larger group of Brothers.
More Than Receiving Degrees
A Reunion is also about fellowship.
Brothers from different Lodges, towns, and backgrounds gather in one place, creating opportunities to reconnect with old friends and meet Masons they may never encounter in their home Lodge.
There is time for conversation, meals, questions, and shared experiences. For newer members, this can be especially valuable. Scottish Rite membership expands a Mason’s circle of Brotherhood beyond his local Lodge and connects him with men who share the same commitment to learning, service, and personal growth.
What Should a First-Time Attendee Expect?
You do not need to arrive knowing everything about the Scottish Rite.
Come prepared to listen, observe, meet people, and enjoy the experience.
Some parts of the day may feel familiar to a Master Mason, while others will introduce new stories, symbols, and ideas. The goal is not to memorize everything you see. Like much of Masonry, the lessons are meant to be reflected upon over time.
Returning members may also find something new in a degree they have seen before. Experience changes perspective, and a lesson that meant one thing years ago may take on new meaning later in life.
A Tradition of Lifelong Learning
The Scottish Rite is often called the “University of Freemasonry” because its degrees encourage continued learning after a man becomes a Master Mason.
A Reunion puts that idea into practice.
It brings together education, ritual, Brotherhood, fellowship, and reflection in a way that reminds Masons that their journey did not end when they received the Master Mason degree.
There is always more to learn, more to consider, and more opportunity to grow.
