The Power of Purpose: How Your Charity Transforms Our Maine Communities

July 20, 2026 by Valley of Portland

At the Valley of Portland, we often speak about “making good men better”. While this journey begins with internal reflection and the study of our degrees, its most profound expression is found in how we serve others.

As Scottish Rite Masons, our core value of Service to Humanity is not just a sentiment; it is a call to action that transforms lives across Southern Maine.

A Foundation of Brotherly Love and Relief

Our commitment to charity is rooted in the three great principles of Freemasonry: Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. We are taught to practice charity not only for our own members but for the community as a whole. When we donate to Masonic charities, we are “walking the talk” of our values, ensuring that our compassion has a tangible, lasting impact.

Where Your Donations Go: Changing Lives in Maine

Your contributions to efforts like the Blue Envelope Appeal and partnerships with the Maine Masonic Charitable Foundation empower several critical initiatives:

  • The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Portland: For over two decades, we have been leaders in helping children overcome the obstacles of dyslexia. Your support provides specialized tutoring at no cost to families, helping students discover the gift of reading and regain their self-esteem.
  • Educational Scholarships: We believe in supporting the bright youth of our future. Through the Leon M. Abbott and Arnold Veague Scholarship funds, we award nearly $100,000 annually to help Maine students achieve their dreams of higher education.
  • The Grand Almoner’s Fund: This vital resource allows us to assist distressed Master Masons, their widows, and orphans during times of financial or physical hardship.
  • Fighting Food Insecurity: We recognize that 1 in 5 children in Maine is food-insecure. The Valley has a history of supporting organizations like the Wayside Food Programs and the York County Shelter Programs’ Food Pantry to ensure our neighbors don’t go hungry.

The “Good Fruit” of Masonic Values

In the Valley of Portland, we believe that “every good tree bears good fruit”. The “tree” of Freemasonry – grounded in kindness and honor – produces the “fruit” of charitable giving that has changed countless lives. Whether it’s through the Bikes for Books program that encourages young readers or supporting NAMI Maine for suicide prevention training, your generosity builds a stronger, more inclusive Maine.

Join Us in Service

Charity is a collective endeavor. When your individual donation is pooled with those of your brothers, its impact is multiplied. We urge every member to reflect on how they can contribute this month. Your time, talent, and resources are the tools we use to build a better world, one “good turn” at a time.

To learn more about our current charitable initiatives or to make a donation, please visit our Membership Page or contact the Valley Secretary.
