Maine Boys Need Mentors, Not Just Messages

June 9, 2026 by Valley of Portland

Boys hear a lot of messages about who they are supposed to become.

Be strong. Be respectful. Be confident. Be independent. Be kind. Be a leader. Be yourself.

Those are good words, but words alone are not enough.

Boys need to see what good men look like in real life. They need fathers, grandfathers, coaches, teachers, neighbors, Brothers, and community leaders who model patience, responsibility, service, honesty, and respect.

They need men who show up consistently, not perfectly. They need examples they can trust.

Boys Learn by Watching

Many boys today are growing up with pressure, distraction, and confusion about what it means to become a man. Some have strong role models at home. Others do not. Some are surrounded by steady support. Others are quietly looking for guidance, belonging, and encouragement.

A mentor does not need to have all the answers. He simply needs to be present, steady, and willing to lead by example.

A boy learns respect when he sees a man treat others with dignity. He learns responsibility when he sees a man keep his word. He learns service when he sees a man give his time without needing attention. He learns strength when he sees a man act with patience instead of anger.

That kind of example can stay with a boy for life.

Masonic Values Belong in the Community

Freemasonry has always taught that good men can become better. Through Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth, Masons are reminded to care for others, act with integrity, and live with purpose.

The Scottish Rite carries that journey forward through values including Integrity, Justice, Tolerance, Service to Humanity, and Devotion to Country.

These values are not just lessons for men inside a Lodge room. They are lessons boys need to see lived out in their homes, schools, teams, neighborhoods, and communities.

Maine Boys to Men Is Doing the Work

This is why the Maine Masonic Charitable Foundation’s support of Maine Boys to Men is so meaningful.

Maine Boys to Men works with boys and men to encourage self-awareness, empathy, respect, and healthier ideas about masculinity. Their programs create space for young people to talk about real issues, challenge harmful stereotypes, and learn what respectful manhood can look like.

The Foundation’s support of this work reflects something Masons already understand: stronger communities are built when good men invest in the next generation.

How Masons Can Help

Maine boys do not need more noise. They need guidance. They need encouragement. They need safe, steady examples of what it means to become respectful, responsible, compassionate men.

Masons can help by supporting organizations like Maine Boys to Men, volunteering with youth programs, mentoring through schools or local nonprofits, showing up at community service projects, encouraging sons and grandsons, and modeling Masonic values in everyday life.

Not every act of mentorship has to be formal. Sometimes it is a conversation, a ride to an event, help with a project, a word of encouragement, or simply being the kind of man a boy can look up to.

Good Men Help Build Good Men

Boys do not become good men by accident.

They become good men when other good men are willing to walk beside them.

Freemasonry teaches that character, service, responsibility, and Brotherhood still matter. Now is the time for Masons across Maine to carry those lessons beyond the Lodge and into the lives of the boys who need them most.
